This sparrow sized bird with cherry red feathers is a male House Finch, Haemorhous mexicanus. [note that the genus name has changed from Carpodacus). I enjoyed watching this little fella and his girl friend come to the bird feeder I put in the front yard. I was amazed at the number of species of birds that winter in west Texas.  I normally do not bait creatures to photograph them but this guy and all his friends ate about 5 pounds of bird seed over the two weeks we had snow on the ground. Hungry little fellas.
