Sundrops-A Showy Daytime Primrose With Square Flower Buds

Berlandieri’s Sundrops (Calylophys berlandieri berlandieri) is a small flowered primrose that is open during the daytime in the spring through midsummer. It can be found in sandy or rocky soils on hillsides or grasslands. Its distinctively narrow leaves can have smooth or toothy margins and they are arranged alternately along the stem. This example shows moderately toothed margins. The small, yellow primrose-like flowers, square shaped flower budsĀ and narrow leaves are the defining characters making field identification of Berlandieri’s Sundrops simple.
